CONTEMPORARY ESTATE PLANNING PARADIGMS FOR MARRIED COUPLES (2 hours)

Planning for married couples today is much more intricate than it was a decade ago. This first session will explain how developments in the federal income, estate, and gift tax laws since 2011 have impacted basic planning considerations. It will also present templates for planning for couples with small, medium, and large estates. Specific topics to be addressed include the portability election, strategies for achieving a complete step-up in basis on the death of the surviving spouse, disclaimer planning, and Clayton QTIPs. The presentation will include discussion of how potential tax reform in 2017 might affect these new planning templates and how to advise couples during these uncertain times.

FEDERAL TAX UPDATE (2 hours)

An informative and entertaining recap of the big federal income, estate, and gift tax cases, rulings, regulations, and legislation from 2016, together with a look at what we might expect in 2017. Specific topics will include the basis consistency rules, whether anyone should care about proposed regulations under section 2704, charitable rollovers, and an update on conservation easements.

Per Sam's request, all attendees must wear a sweater-vest. Prizes for best sweater-vests!
