When an estate planning attorney is working with someone strong in their faith, especially when that client has a different faith than that of the attorney, doesn't the attorney provide a greater service to the client with an understanding of how the client's faith might impact their estate plan? This presentation discusses how the religious requirements of Christianity, Islam and Judaism may impact the estate planning for clients who practice those faiths. The ethical implications of those requirements will also be discussed.\n \nLearning Objectives:\n Understand the responsibilities of attorneys to understand religious and cultural differences and how they impact an attorney’s approach to estate planning. Understand the approach under Judaism, Christianity and Islam towards estate planning, end of life issues and disposition of remains Understand the ethical issues that intersect with religious and diversity challenges \nSpeaker: Stacy E. Singer\n \nStacy E. Singer is the National Practice Leader for Trust and Wealth Advisory Services at The Northern Trust Company, where she works closely with trust professionals on all aspects of the delivery of fiduciary services to clients nationally and with wealth advisory professionals on the delivery of proactive wealth planning advice. She previously served as the National Director of Estate Settlement Services. Stacy joined Northern Trust in 2003 as a Vice President and an Estate Administrator, and then served as a Manager of Administration in the Estate Settlement Services Group, managing a team and handling account acceptance and risk management for the division.\n \nStacy was previously a Vice President in the Estate Administration Division at Harris Trust & Savings Bank in Chicago, where she handled the administration of decedent, minors and disabled estates. Prior to Harris, she was a member of the estate and succession planning department at Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella, P.C., where she specialized in estate and succession planning strategies, estate and trust administration, and guardianship for minors and disabled adults. She has been appointed as a Guardian ad Litem in both decedent and disabled estates and as a Special Administrator in decedent estates.\n \nStacy was previously in private law practice, as an Associate at Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella, P.C. from 1995 to 1999, and as an Associate at Chuhak & Tecson, P.C. from 1993 to 1995.\n \nStacy received a B.A. degree in political science with high honors from the University of Michigan and a J.D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School. Stacy also holds a Certified Private Wealth AdvisorSM designation.\n \nStacy is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), where she serves as the Illinois State Chair. She is a past President of the Chicago Estate Planning Council and a member of the Board of Directors for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education. She is a former Adjunct Professor at the John Marshall Law School, Center for Tax Law and Employee Benefits, and was previously on the faculty of the American Bankers Association National Trust School. She is the Chair of the Professional Advisory Committee for Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago and a member of the American Technion Institute and The Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired. She is a frequent speaker for numerous organizations, including the Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning, ACTEC, ALI-CLE, the Notre Dame Tax and Estate Planning Institute, the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and the Chicago Estate Planning Council.
